The following examples illustrate the various ways that a digital camera can enhance the activities happening both in your classroom and in your school. Because pictures cost nothing to take or develop, you can photograph everything that happens, and use the best pictures in a variety of ways. We hope some of the ways we've used our photos in our school will inspire your own creative uses for a digital camera.

Preserve your incredible classroom displays, after they've been taken down and are only a fond memory!

Display your students' pictures in September to help you get to know them, and them each other. Take new ones in June to see how they've grown. Send both home ... parents will love them.

Make a poster showing pictures of playground rules being followed.
Use lots of pictures in newsletters; it makes them more likely to be read.
Use photos in awards displays, and on award certificates.

Posted notices of fun events or tournaments can have photos too!
Display photos of student artwork that has gone home. Preserve your great ideas ... see more art ideas here.
Record award winners. Start a photo gallery of past winners. Submit pictures to the newspaper by email.
Record your Christmas Concert for posterity. Use concert pictures in art to make Christmas cards.

Capture special events, even spontaneous ones, as they happen.
Illustrate science experiment procedures on a poster. Record and display results.
Illustrate baking recipes step-by-step on a poster. Display the results, even after the real thing has been eaten!
Document the fun things you did on that field trip, for everyone to see.

Record sporting event results. Make a poster showing the proper form when attempting a new sport.

Keep the memories of each Hallowe'en alive with pictures of all the great costumes, year to year.
Record exceptional project work before the results get taken home; use the pix to introduce the same project next year.
Some science projects involve unique ideas, and can't be preserved after the experiment ... record them digitally!
Special classroom presentations or instruction can be captured in pictures to preserve a record of accomplishments that won't show up on a report card.

Difficult procedures can be illustrated for students easily with photos. Take pictures the first time.
Pictures of Fun Day activities make a great wall display. Any time!

Many of our teachers use a simple no-frills digital camera; as long as you don't plan on taking large group shots indoors at a distance, or try to take indoors action shots, the camera works well. Photo quality is acceptable for the purposes for which we use the photos ... wall displays, newsletters, and of course, our website and on-line yearbook. A simple digital camera will produce photo-quality full-sheet images with photo paper (and lots of ink!) when we need them.

For special indoor photos, and especially action shots of sports, we use a digital camera that allows us to adjust the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO values; coupled with an attachable flash, we can capture crisp photos even in the darkest gym.
