A camp cook, whether working at an oil industry or hunting camp, must be someone who likes to 'rough it', and who can get along with others. And of course, they have to be able to cook good meals in large quantities, from scratch. "Lodging is supplied as it is for all employees, but on occasion camp cooks travel from home, or prefer to supply their own lodging. Their job consists of cooking breakfast and dinner and on occasion a lunch, keeping the camp grounds neat and tidy, and looking after the general maintenance and cleaning of buildings. Hours can run from 5:00am. to 11:00pm. depending on the type of industry, with several hours off in the middle of the day. Starting wages are around $150.00 per day in a hunting camp; oil industry wages may be similar."
