If you know someone young who is having trouble learning to tell time, we have a small free program that may help. It is designed to help young ones master the special vocabulary used by all of us to answer the question 'What time is it?' ... a vocabulary that can be very confusing. For example, what time is it when we say 'quarter to', or 'five minutes after'? Or 'half past'? Part of the difficulty is that young ones haven't yet mastered fractions. They need to learn the words.

The free program we have for you is 'Clock Solitaire', and it plays just like the familiar card game, but with one important difference. Instead of suits, it uses time expressions, and you play the cards in their correct locations on the clock! Here's what a game in progress looks like:

There's even a high-score table! The game is completely free, and is the product of the well-respected Grey Olltwit software company at http://www.adders.org/freeware. We have a variety of his free software titles available from our site, and they are highly recommended.
The game is self-installing. You can get your own copy of 'Clock Face Solitaire' here (426k zipped).

Your child can also practice telling time right here on our site ... go to our 'Telling Time' page and practice moving the hands of a clock to match selected times.
