The twin towers of the World Trade Center were completed in 1974, and were briefly the tallest buildings in the world, until the completion of the Sears Tower in Chicago the next year. The Trade Center had 110 floors, rising 1,353 feet into the sky over Manhattan. From observation decks at the top of the towers it was possible to see 45 miles in every direction.

Here are a few dramatic photos of these buildings to let you see just how big they really were. These pictures are large ones, and may require a few seconds to load.

The satellite views on the pages above were taken by the IKONOS satellite, from a height of 420 miles above the earth. These remarkable images, as well as many other views of famous landmarks around the world, are can be seen at  spaceimaging.com.
