When the first stage ran out of fuel, explosive bolts fired, jettisoning it. This allowed the smaller engines of the second stage to ignite. (Imagine the feat of engineering needed to design exploding bolts that would push away the expired first stage without damaging the stage above... that contained another huge set of fuel and oxygen tanks!)
