Mars is the next planet from the sun after Earth. Smaller than Earth, it can't retain much of an atmosphere, but there are traces of CO2 and H20 ice on the surface, and evidence that there once was free-flowing water. Scientists hope to discover traces of life in these areas, from soil samples returned by probes. The spacecraft Odyssey has just reached Mars ... find out more, plus lots of Mars facts, on our Mars Odyssey page. Or have a look at a picture taken by the Hubble telescope in Aug. 2003, during Mars' closest approach to Earth.
