Because other galaxies are so far away, most of the billions of stars in them are a blur. Any stars that we can actually distinguish are the brightest ones in the galaxy; a star like our sun would not be seen in this picture. The bright objects embedded in the galaxy are really clusters of hundreds of thousands of stars.
