Comets are named after their discoverer, often an amateur astronomer. When comets are far from the sun, they are merely pinpoints, and can only be spotted by looking at photos months apart to see if any 'stars' moved. (Actual stars show very little motion against the sky over only a few months; they are too far away). Amateur astronomers often specialize in this long-term sky-watching that professional astronomers don't have the time for.
