Comet Hale-Bopp was well-photographed by amateur astronomers when it passed near the sun a few years ago. Comets travel in long elliptical orbits, and only when they are close to the sun does the tail form; it's streaming ice, gases, and dust are pushed away from the body of the comet by the sun's light pressure.
