Gaspra is another asteroid who image was taken by a passing probe. Occasionally, asteroids collide or bump themselves out of their orbit and into a new one, which may take them closer to the sun. An asteroid passed within 5 million km of earth (close, on the cosmic scale) during the 1980's. Some have hit the earth in the past; large ones would have drastic effects. (But you saw the movie ... )
