This image represents our best guess at what the black hole Cygnus X-1 looks like. It is a binary (pair of stars) in which one star has exploded as a supernova, leaving behind a super-compressed black hole. This hole is sucking matter from the other still-burning star. Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole discovered; the discovery was made in the early 1970's at the University of Toronto.
