This is the remnant from a star that exploded as a supernova. Called the Crab Nebula because of its distinctive shape, it is all that is left of a star that was seen to blow up in 1054. It was observed and recorded by people in China. The supernova was so bright that it could be seen in the daylight, and was bright enough to read by at night.
