Types of Projects

(These categories are guidelines for projects at Worsley School; other schools may use different ones)

Display Project
This type of project displays information at a level corresponding to the student's grade. Some research may be involved. The mark for this type of project is based on how well the student understands the material, how well it is displayed, and how well the student can explain it.
(Only grades 5 & 6 may do display projects. These are ineligible to be chosen for any multi-grade award, or the Regional Fair)

Research Project
A research project is a display project where the student has researched a topic which is above his or her grade level. The entire mark for this type of project is based on how well the information is displayed, and how well the student can explain it without referring to the display.


Engineering Project

An engineering project is one where the student has built some sort of device. The device should be on display. It must have been built by the student, from scratch (ie: not built from a kit), although parts of the object can be 'add-ons'. (For example, a solar cooker should be built from scratch, whereas a home-made water filter could include a small pump within it, as an add-on). The mark for this type of project will take into account how much design and construction was actually done by the student, as well as the features of the device itself. The student should also have a display showing what the device is, what it does, and how it was built, and must also be able to explain these things.


Experiment

An experimental project is one where the student has asked a question, and has followed correct scientific procedure to determine the answer. Full details of the experiment must be displayed.

How much of the apparatus used to do the experiment that is actually on display is up to the student; none is required if photos or clear diagrams are used in the display. The mark for this type of project will reflect the experimental design, as well as the display and explanation by the student.
