What is 'pH'?
by Tyler S.

What is pH ? pH measures how acidic or basic a substance is. Acids and bases are groups of compounds that each have several properties in common. Acids taste sour, are soluble in water, and undergo similar chemical reactions. Bases taste bitter, are soluble in water, feel slippery, and react with acids. Substances that are neither acidic or basic, such as water, are said to be neutral.
Some strong acids and bases can cause serious skin damage, or produce fumes that can harm your body or lungs.

Acidity is measured in pH scale from 0 to 14, with 14 very basic and 0 very acidic.

Anything with a pH between 0 and 3 is considered to be a very strong acid. Bases between 12 and 14 are considered to be very strong bases.

Some examples of substances:

Battery Acid
0.5
Very strong acid

Human Blood
7.4
About neutral

Drain Cleaner
13.8
Very strong base

Acids and bases, whether strong or weak, will react together. In this type of reaction, called a neutralization reaction, both the acid and the base combine to produce a neutral substance.
