Using Properties of a Substance
by Sonja

List the properties you can use to identify them

1) Odour: What does it smell like???

Milk

Ammonia

Example: Milk and ammonia. They look the same in color but you can identify them by smelling each one.

2) Lustre: If it is a solid, is it shiny or dull???

Example: Aluminum and Iron. Aluminum is a silvery-colored solid and Iron is a gray solid. (Aluminum left, Iron right)

3) Colour: What colour is it or is it colorless???

Maple

Pine

Example: Maple and Pine (wood). To tell these two apart, you would look at their colours.

4) State: Is it a solid, liquid or a gas???

Example#1: An ice cube and an orange. An ice cube is frozen water so it is a solid and an orange is a solid

.

Example#2: Orange juice and CO2. CO2 is a gas and orange juice is a liquid. You can tell them apart because you can’t see the gas and the orange juice is a liquid.

CO2 is invisible.
