ADDING & SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS
by Ryan B.

Adding Polynomials:

When you are adding like terms, just add them together. Don't change the exponents.

6x2 + 8x2 = 14x2

Brackets can be dropped.

  (3x2 - 5x) + (2x2 - 4x)
= 3x2 - 5x + 2x2 - 4x
= 5x2 - 9x

Subtracting Polynomials:

When subtracting, the exponent also stays the same, and the coefficients get subtracted.

8x2 - 4x2 = 4x2

When you are subtracting brackets, the terms in the bracket after the subtraction sign change.

  (6x2 - 5x) - (4x2 - 6x)
= 6x2 - 5x - 4x2 + 6x
= 2x2 + 1x
