Mean, Median, & Mode (Gr. 8 Review)
by Derek M.

Mean, median, and mode are ways in which you can analyze data.

Mean:
... the average, or the sum of a set of numbers, divided by the number of numbers in the set.
For example, to calculate the mean of:

45, 76, 54, 66, 36

45+76+54+66+36=277
277 divided by 5 = 55.4

Mean = 55.4

Median:
... the middle number, or the number such that half the numbers in the set are less than it and half are greater than it.
For example if you have this set of numbers:

2, 5, 3, 9, 11, 17, 13, 6, 15

First put them in order:

2,  3,  5,  6,  9, 11, 13, 15, 17

9 is the median because it is the middle number

If there is an even number of numbers, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers.
For example, with these numbers:

2,  4,   6,  8

(4 + 6) divided by 2 = 5

5 would be the median

Mode:

... the number that occurs most often in a set of data.
For example, with this set of numbers:

22, 43, 56, 78, 45, 88, 56, 34

56 would be the mode
