Order of Operations

This question is tricky to do on a calculator. Here's why.


To do this question you need to use the ( ) signs on your calculator, around the bottom. This is because the bottom has to be worked out before you divide. If you don't tell your calculator this, it won't know that the thing is a fraction, and it won't do it that way.

You would type on your calculator ... (30) (5 + 1)


and you would get the correct answer 5


You need to use brackets for lots of questions ... for example:


            14
            ---
            5+2
You must put brackets around the 5 + 2, so the calculator will do '14 divided by 7', and get '2'.


Here's another one:




You type (4 + 5 – 8 x 3) (2 – 6 + 4 – 2)


... and get the answer 7.5
