The Hidden Lake

One of the largest lakes in the world is Lake Vostok. Never heard of it? That's not surprising... it exists in a place where it can't be seen... under almost 4 kilometres of ice in the center of the Antarctic continent!
Lake Vostok was discovered it during radar surveys (by satellite) of the continent's sub-ice surface. The lake is 72 kilometres long, and half a kilometre deep.
Suprisingly, Lake Vostok is liquid water, despite being buried under 4 km of ice! Geothermal heat sources beneath the crust keep the water from freezing.
