The northeastern region of the United States has always had a high proportion of smokers in the population as well. In this case, it is not a tobacco-growing region, nor is it a particularly poor area. People here have always smoked, and have not been quick to give it up. A similar pattern occurs in Canada just across the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, where the lifestyle (rural areas with a long history) also includes smoking, more so than elsewhere. |
