   School Calendar    Sports Schedule

"The year is winding down quite quickly, with less than 40 days left. We just finished celebrating Education Week with an Open House and the first and (hopefully) annual competition, “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” Thanks to Mr. Carleton and his crew for organizing the game, and thanks to Bonnie, Val and Dawn for preparing and serving the lunch. Thank you also to the brave parents who took on the school team in the challenge!
“Students in grade 3, 6 and 9 will be preparing soon for the Provincial Achievement Exams that start later this month. Students in the other grades will soon be into 'review mode' fairly soon as well.
“Badminton is finished. All our players did very well and we had one Senior High student, Brittany Dimion, attend the Provincial Badminton Tournament in Cochrane. Track and Field is not far away once the school grounds are dry.
“The Booster Club has been fundraising to help out the sports teams with their fees. Without their assistance, as well as that of the Student's Union, costs would be much higher for sports. We appreciate all the support, and thank the volunteers.
“Parent Council meets tonight (Tuesday May 6) at 7 pm. Enjoy the nice weather that hopefully will stay for awhile."

What's Been Happening in Our Classrooms
Social 8/9 with Laryssa Speck
We have almost left the Cold War and are venturing into Glasnost and Perestroika. Soon we will be looking at the break-up of the USSR and Eastern Europe. We have been studying the map of Cold War Europe and have had a couple of quizzes already on it. We are starting to prepare for the provincial exam coming in June. The Grade 8 students do not write it this year but the Grade 9 students will.
World Religion 8/9 with Laryssa Speck
We have finished our in-depth study of Islam and now we are looking into other religions. Each student has chosen a religion that they are interested in, and they are researching that religion based on an outline that has been established. It is fascinating to learn about the different beliefs, and we are learning to appreciate the differences between all beliefs.
Phys Ed 10/20/30 with Laryssa Speck
We are hoping to finally get outside into the fresh spring air. We have finished our basketball and floor hockey units. Next we will be training in track & field. We will be working on shotput, discus throw, javelin throw, long jumps and high jump.
Math 8 with Bill Willis
We are just about ready to begin reviewing for the final exam.
Math 9 with Bill Willis
We are half done the algebra unit; only the trigonometry unit remains before we begin reviewing for the final exam.
Math 30 with Bill Willis
We are more than half-way through the trigonometry unit. Two short units on combinatorics and statistics remain. Students have work to do every night, including preparing for the weekly review test and doing questions from the current unit review assignment.
Art 10 with Bill Willis
Students have just completed a hall mural, and have done some more work with pastels. After some assignments and quizzes are completed this week, we will be working on individual projects.
CTS with Bill Willis
Students have completed the unit on script writing and video making and editing. This week we will be starting photography.

Student Art Gallery
Visit our K-12 student Art Gallery for art projects by our students. We have art from students at all grade levels, in various media. Don't miss the Kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 2 string creations and 3D art!

Milk Program
We will be continuing with the milk program again this year. We will keep track of the milk using punch cards. The cost of white or chocolate milk is 50 cents per carton; each card will hold 20 milk purchases, or $10 worth of milk per card. You can purchase as many cards for your child/children as you wish. It will be their responsibility to notify you when they are running out. Milk will continue to be sold to 7-12 students at their food booth.

Participation at Sports Events
Please note that if a child is absent for all or part of a day, he/she is not permitted to play in a game or tournament scheduled for that day, unless a doctor's note explaining the absence is given to the office before the game or tournament begins.

Riding the Bus
If your elementary child will not be riding the bus to their home on a given day, please remember that a note for the teacher as well as for to the bus driver is required. Junior/Senior students are required to have a note for the bus driver only.

Student Attendance
All students must have a signed note from their parent, or a phone call, when returning from an absence or leaving the school. Sr. High students who have returned the signed form for open campus lunchtimes are allowed to leave for the lunch break, but that's all. In addition, all students must sign out of the school when leaving. Sr. High students who sign out and miss a scheduled class without a note will be considered 'skipping'.

Worsley School hosted the tournament this past weekend. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make it a success, including Rick Carleton, Darren Phelps, Allison Ansorger, and the PhysEd students who acted as referees.

What's New in the Library
We have purchased book stands, a colourful carpet, and a table and chair set for our younger patrons to enjoy when they come to the library. There have been many favourable comments about the selection, and the children who have made use of the reading section all say they like the carpet the best!
Once again, I am reminding patrons to check your library cards for renewal dates. I have been hearing about disgruntled librarians from other libraries having to renew cards. Not a big task by any means, but apparently one worth commenting on.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Delainah Velichka for her help in selecting reading material for our Aboriginal patrons. She has ensured that the books cover all age groups, and is in the process herself of reading the books as they come in. Thanks Delainah!
Unfortunately, with the rising cost of library supplies and operations, it is necessary to begin charging over-due fines to our patrons. We will begin this in April so that it is not a huge surprise when you return your books! Please keep an eye open for the due date of your books, and if you feel that you need more time, just give me a call at 685-3842 and I will renew them for you. If you have a computer at home, you may also do this yourself by going to www.tracpac.ab.ca . Log in using your barcode number and your PIN (the last four digits of your phone number) and you will be able to renew your books.
Library Hours
Tuesdays and Fridays
9:00 am to noon, 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm
If you have any questions about the library, or would like me to order books for you, please call me during library hours at 685-3842.
Visit our website at www.worsleylibrary.org.

Booster Club
The Worsley School Sports Booster Club is a non-profit organization set up of parent volunteers who wish to make sports programs available to all children. The monies we receive through fund raising, grants and generous donations enable children in our community to participate in school team sports. We feel that all children should have equal opportunity to play on sports teams without money being an issue. Sports fees help to pay for uniform rental, referees, sports and referee clinics, a portion of tournament fees, and equipment expenses. Without the Sports Booster Club in effect, school sports fees could be escalated, which would possibly deter some children from being a part of a team.
Anyone wishing to become a voice on the Worsley School Sports Booster Club is welcome to attend the meetings.

Resources for Students and Teachers:

Our Science, Math, and The Arts sections are overflowing with new material.
Visit our always up-to-date 'What's New' page for all the details.

More Resources for Parents, Students and Teachers
LearnAlberta.ca http://www.learnalberta.ca supports lifelong learning by providing quality online resources to the Kindergarten to Grade 12 community in Alberta. Students, teachers, and parents can use the site to find multimedia learning resources that are correlated to the Alberta programs of study.
Some of the resources on LearnAlberta.ca are licensed by Alberta Education for authorized users only. Therefore, the Web site is password protected. When using the site at school, the userID and password will be automatically entered for users; students and teachers will only have to click the “Login as an Authorized User” button to enter the site. However, when students, teachers, and parents want to access LearnAlberta.ca from a computer outside of a school network, they will need to enter the jurisdiction userID and password. These can be obtained from our school office; they are also printed in the paper version of this newsletter, which went home on September 6th.

BlueJeans
Worsley Central School staff have named Fridays and the last working day of each week to be 'Casual Day' for the staff. If you should happen to stop by the school on either of these days and see us in blue jeans or casual wear, it is not because we are dressing sloppily. The staff decided on a whole that each person dressing casually would pay $2.00 every week into a fund to support the Breakfast Program. We feel this is a very worthwhile program as so many of our students benefit from it.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?
In conjunction with Education Week and our Open House, we put on the first annual 'Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?' competition, featuring a team of students and a team of parents. We are happy to announce that our parents (at least, the ones who competed) are indeed smarter than a fifth grader! Pictures of all the fun are in our Yearbook.

Worsley School 2008 Photo Calendars

Our beautiful photo calendars are ready to purchase! They make great gifts. Find out more here.

Labels for Education
Worsley Central School has just enrolled in the Campbell's Labels for Education program. The goal of this program is to support healthy eating, and also to earn free products for schools. By simply collecting UPC symbols from participating products our school can earn all sorts of free rewards, from books to audio-video equipment to sports equipment. So start saving your labels now!
To see a list of participating products you can visit http://www.labelsforeducation.ca and click on the eligible product link on the left sidebar. Some of the products include Campbell's soups, Prego sauce, and Goldfish crackers.
Save your labels with the UPC symbol attached and send them in to the school with your child. In a future newsletter we'll announce our label goal and reward we are working toward!

Breakfast Program
We would like to thank Donnie Speck's UFA for the generous donation for this year's Breakfast Program. Thanks also to Barb Dous at the Worsley General store for the donations of bread throughout last year, and Randi Dodds for her delicious homemade bread that she has contributed. We couldn't make this program work without you!
Thank you as well to the Breakfast for Learning (Canadian Living Foundation) Association for their generous donation to our Breakfast Program.

More Reminders
For safety purposes, please leave clear access to the fire hydrant when parking at the school.

A reminder to parents, if your child has a game or practice that does not begin immediately after school, the child is to leave the school and return shortly before the game/practice.

Dress Code
Students are reminded that they are not to wear headphones or sunglasses while in school. Clothing which contains profanity or obscene material, or which advertises illegal activity, is not acceptable for wear while in school. Parents will be contacted as necessary.

Calculators in High School
Students in grades 7, 8, and 9 are required to have a simple scientific calculator for use in math class. (A graphing calculator is not necessary).
TI83+Students taking Pure or Applied Math 10, 20 and 30 are required to have a TI83+ graphing calculator. Only the TI83+ brand is acceptable.
Grade 10 students who are enrolling in Math 14 and 24 need just a simple scientific calculator. (For this reason, grade 10 students should wait until they are sure which course they are taking before purchasing a new calculator).
