2004-5 We'd like to take this opportunity to update you on the annual S.A.D.D. Provincial Leadership Conference that we went to in Edmonton. It was an awesomely cool time; we learned new ways to pass on our message … 'Friends Don't Let Friends Drink and Drive'. There were fantastic speakers at this conference that told us their experiences with drinking and driving. One mother told us about the traumatic loss of her daughter. She was riding with a drunk driver. Another speaker talked about the unknown risks that we take when we believe nothing bad will happen to us. On top of all this we listened to a paramedic tell us about each step of a trauma call - from the time the call comes in, to arriving at the scene, to how paramedics treat critically injured crash victims, and what can continue to happen at the hospital. This is the first opportunity for our S.A.D.D chapters, both in Hines Creek and Worsley, to operate with some spare funding. A portion of the funds will be used to assist with costs in various campaigns, such as the candy cane check stop, and other promotional materials. We also hope to have a speaker come to our community to tell you about their experience with drinking and driving. We would like to thank the community and surrounding areas for their generous charitable donations. Sponsors:
We would also like to thank everyone else out there as we continue to fight against the biggest killer on the roads. Again, we are all doing a great job, but we are not finished yet! Since the beginning of September, we have been active in getting our message out:
The Worsley Students Against Drinking and Driving team hosted a few activities throughout the month of November to get our message out. These activities were a success and we appreciate everyone who participated and got involved.
The following is a poem we found quite moving; it was written by Ashley: Everyday I wake up crying, At the inquest into the world's first road traffic death in 1896, the coroner was reported to have said, 'This must never happen again'. More then a century later 1.2 million people are killed on the roads every year and up to 50 million more are injured. These casualties of the road will increase if action is not taken. January 2005 We hope that you had a safe and Merry Christmas. We are excited and anxious to get back into our routine. We want to continue to fight to reach our goals of preventing drinking and driving. It goes without saying that throughout the entire world, drinking and driving has become a killer we will not ignore. We continue to strive to build on the matter of impaired driving and search for answers on how to stop this completely preventable epidemic. This senseless act has been taking the lives of our families and friends. As a society this must no longer be tolerated. Thank-you for your support with the red ribbon campaign. It was very successful, we gave out hundreds of ribbons throughout Worsley, Hines Creek and the Fairview area. |
