South Africa
We made some friends at Kirstenhof Primary School, in Cape Town, South Africa, whose students corresponded with our Grade 4/5/6 class in 1998-99. This is a very beautiful area, with Table Mountain nearby, and the sea. Popular tourist attractions in the area include the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Point Nature Reserve, and the Table Mountain Cable Way. The climate is 'Mediterranean'... there is never snow on the ground!

Capetown

From our friends:

"Our school in Cape Town is in an old Forest Station area. We still have Tokia Forest Station very near to us. A mountain range called the Table Mt. Range runs down the centre of the Cape Peninsula and so all of Cape Town live beneath the mountain and near to the beach. We do live in a very pretty part of the world.

We have some tourist "musts" such as :
  • The Waterfront ( a large shopping and entertainment area in our main dock)
  • Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
  • Cape Point Nature Reserve (where the cold Atlantic Ocean meets the warm Indian Ocean)
  • The Winelands (people visit the farms and taste their wines)

You know, there are actually just too many to begin. Visits us one day, you will not be disappointed. ( I did not even mention the Table Mountain Cable Way......probably THE most popular attraction!!)

Because we have a warm mediterranean climate ( we never have snow on the ground) , we love to swim in the hot summer months, and many homes have swimming pools even though the sea is so close. Our school has a pool and many of us do swimming/ stroke lessons at school. The better swimmers compete in school galas against other schools.

Our teachers coach sports after school every day. These include swimming, cricket, tennis and rugby, hockey, and netball. We have private coaches who come to our school to coach ballet, modern dancing, judo, and playball. Culturally, the school offers a general knowledge club, choir, extra computer club and chess.

Our subject choices include English (the most detailed study), Afrikaans, Xhosa (3 languages, all aspects ), Maths, History, Geography, Science, Needlework/Woodwork /Technology, Physical Education, Religious Instruction, Library Skills, Computer Education, and Music.

Our school day is from 8 am until 2:30 pm, with two breaks of 20 and 30 minutes for tea and lunch. We all bring packed lunches, and there is a tuck shop/ lunch club. Most of us sit in the sun or play sports on the fields at breaks. After school we each play a sport twice a week."

Best regards
