North Carolina
Our North Carolina friends were students in 5th grade at Northwest School, in Lexington, N.C., during the '98-99 school year, and corresponded with our students here in Worsley.
The Lexington school, in Davidson County, is about an hour away from the Appalachian mountains, two to three hours from the Atlantic, and an hour north of Charlotte. It is in the central part of the state
.

North Carolina:
The Carolina Hurricanes play hockey in a town very close to Lexington, called Greensboro. Some of the students work on their parents' tobacco farms.

They write: 'Our class is held in a rectangular trailer outside of the school like about 9 other classes. Our school is K-5. We are getting ready for Hallowe'en, although it's not officially celebrated at out school. It's only 50 degrees here, and we're starting to think it's the arctic!
Our school is unique in that we are split in two. About 450 of us are on the "year-round" schedule, which means we start the new year in early July and go for nine weeks and then take a three week break. We do this until late May and then we have all of June off.
The other 600 or so students start the new school year in late August and go until early June and take only the usual holidays off.'
