 Our Science Section contains a page about the Marianas Trench; it's the deepest spot in any ocean of the world. It's located in the Pacific Ocean, just west of the Phillippines. It is sometimes called the 'Challenger Deep', because it was located and named in 1951 after His Majesty's Ship 'Challenger' of the British Royal Navy.We had made a small mistake when writing the page, erroneously attributing the name to the deep-diving submersible vehicle that first explored the trench, when in fact that vehicle was named after the ship. We were contacted by the son of a member of the crew of that ship, who lives in England, and who graciously corrected our mistake. He went on to inform us that he is now researching the survey voyages of the ship, in preparation for the 50th anniversary of the discovery.
