Gary & Daphne Hunt gadaboutt@internetnorth.com.au Gary & Daphne live in Yungaburra, Far North Queensland, Australia, which is southwest of Cairns on the east coast of Australia. They visited our site, and left us this information about where they live: "To all the kids at Worsley School: You have presented the world a wonderful website that is a pleasure to visit. We are a very prosperous farming community some 880 m above sea level. We have to travel about one hour down the mountain range to get to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. Now there is a project for someone to research ... a great natural wonder of the world! Again, thank you all, and G'day from Aussie." We thought the Great Barrier Reef was a fascinating topic too, so we found out a little bit about it to share with you, below. |

'The Great Barrier Reef extends for 2,300 km along the north-eastern coast of Australia, from Cape York in the north to southern Queensland. It is not one large reef, but a network of about 2900 individual reefs, with the same area as the United Kingdom'.
What makes a reef? On this coast of Australia there is shallow water only 20-30 meters deep, and lots of sunlight, which has given the Great Barrier Reef the chance to form. It is composed of living corals, tiny creatures that build themselves shells from minerals in the water. Over many thousands of years, the coral shells left behind as the creatures died have formed a massive 'wall' on the sea floor. The top layer is composed of living corals. Corals are animals in the same family as jellyfish, but make a solid skeleton of limestone; living coral looks like a carpet of waving, colourful creatures. Microscopic plants live in the coral's skin and produce sugar by photosynthesis. The corals absorb these sugars, while the plants benefit from a safe house and good supply of carbon dioxide.Tourists from all over the world come to the reef to dive and discover the amazing variety of sea creatures that live and thrive in the safe sanctuary provided by the coral wall. ![]() |
